The standard picture of Canadian sport is domestic: Calgary against Edmonton, Montréal against Toronto, the same fixtures argued over for generations. New research suggests that picture is now only half the story.
An analysis published by Betano ranked head to head matchups across five leagues on match data, and cross-border fixtures turn up near the top of almost every table. In two cases they outrank the domestic rivalries Canadians consider definitive.
Two Canadian clubs sit in the NHL’s top ten, both against Florida
Florida Panthers versus Ottawa Senators ranked third across the entire NHL at 78.60. Edmonton Oilers versus Florida Panthers ranked tenth at 74.29, with obvious recent history behind it.
Both scored higher than the Battle of Alberta, which came in at 74.83 and ninth league-wide. Calgary against Edmonton remains the most intense all-Canadian hockey rivalry in the data, but it is no longer the most intense rivalry Canadian teams are involved in.
The most unusual entry is Ottawa Senators versus Vancouver Canucks, 16th league-wide at 72.22, which is domestic but barely regional. The cities are more than 3,500 kilometres apart, share no division and have no meaningful shared history. The matchup averages 52.30 hits per game with a fight-match share of 100 percent, meaning every meeting in the study period involved fighting or significant rough play.
The Blue Jays’ rivalries are a division, not a team
As Canada’s only MLB franchise, the Toronto Blue Jays have no domestic rivalry available to them at all. The research found that all four of their qualifying matchups come from the AL East.
Boston leads, ranked eighth overall, with 34.4 percent of 61 head to head games decided by a single run. Baltimore follows at 29.7 percent across 64 games, then the New York Yankees at 22.7 percent over 66 games and Tampa Bay at 20.3 percent across 64.
The pattern matters more than any individual number. The Blue Jays are not locked into one rivalry but into a division-wide run of tight, high-frequency fixtures against four American clubs, played dozens of times a season.
Soccer follows the same shape
In MLS, the highest-scoring matchup in the whole study is CF Montréal versus Chicago Fire at 81.50, first in the league. Montréal versus Orlando City SC ranks seventh at 70.74 and Atlanta United versus Montréal also makes the Canadian top five at 61.50. FC Cincinnati versus Toronto FC scores 64.20.
Every fixture in the Canadian MLS top five is cross-border. There is no all-Canadian entry on the list at all.
“If you only count the rivalries Canadians argue about in bars, you miss most of what the data found,” says a Betano spokesperson. “Some of the fiercest fixtures Canadian teams play are against opponents nobody thinks of as rivals.”
Basketball is the outlier
The Toronto Raptors are the one Canadian franchise the research found sitting comfortably mid-table. Their strongest rivalry, against the Philadelphia 76ers, scored 54.52 across 26 meetings, followed by Brooklyn at 54.16, Cleveland at 52.56 and Miami at 48.62.
Compared with the NBA’s top-ranked matchup, Minnesota Timberwolves versus Portland Trail Blazers at 88.45, Toronto sits well down the league. The study notes roster turnover since the Raptors’ 2019 championship run as one possible factor in narratives that have not had time to build.
Across the other four leagues, though, the pattern is consistent. Canada fields teams in five major North American competitions, four of them structurally American, and the rivalries the data rates most highly reflect that structure rather than the domestic fixtures the conversation tends to centre on.
